Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes improvement to the intersection of Poole Road (S.R. 1007) at Grasshopper Road/Clifton Road (S.R. 2511) in the Town of Knightdale, Wake County. This project will build an eastbound right turn lane on Poole Road and a northbound left turn lane on Grasshopper Road. The proposed improvements are expected to relieve congestion and improve safety at the intersection. New features will include turn lanes, increased turning radii to accommodate larger vehicles, drainage upgrades, new curb and gutter where necessary to minimize property and utility impacts, and signal modifications to accommodate the new intersection and lane configuration.

History

The Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) law includes a provision for a funding allocation to local governments based on funding contributed by the local government to transportation projects or revenue from tolling. This bonus allocation can be used to fund the construction of other eligible highway projects.

Early in 2024, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) received notice from NCDOT that there would be a bonus allocation to CAMPO from the N.C. 540 (toll road) project.  Since CAMPO has not yet selected the projects to receive funding from the bonus allocation, this project (the intersection of Poole Road at Grasshopper Road/Clifton Road) is only funded for preliminary engineering at this time.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
