TradePort California
TradePort California
The Fresno Council of Governments (Fresno COG) is working on a study to identify possible sites for a new trade port that will make it easier and cleaner to move goods in the Central Valley and across California.
The TradePort California project is a concept of a shipping and distribution center that supports goods movement to and from California's seaports into different regions by train and emission-friendly trucks. They include buildings such as warehouses located near existing train tracks and roads, as well as training facilities and the equipment needed to serve emission-friendly trucks. Trade ports will leverage the Central Valley’s location in the heart of California to expand its role as the state’s main logistics hub, while also supporting emission-friendly transportation and improving air quality.
What is a TradePort California?
The Central Valley is home to a growing population and one of the largest agricultural economies in the world. Right now, imported cargo comes to us through seaports, where it is loaded onto trucks and shipped to our region. A trade port is a new type of shipping center that will not only improve the way we receive these goods, but also help us export the food we grow and products we make. It must be placed in an area where there are railroad tracks and major roads such as freeways nearby. That will allow trains and emission-friendly trucks to reach the Tradeport California project site quickly and easily.
What Fresno COG is Doing
Private companies would be responsible for building the Tradeport California project. Fresno COG’s work includes developing a study to identify sites where it could be located. An ideal TradePort California site would be:
- Near existing train tracks
- Close to major freeways
- At least 300 acres of land
- Zoned for industrial uses
- Away from schools, homes, hospitals and other sensitive uses
The final plan will be approved in 2026.
