Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace Bridge on Tuscaloosa Street over U.S. 29 / U.S. 220 (South O’Henry Boulevard). While the existing bridge is still safe to travel on, the bridge has deteriorated and is no longer feasible to maintain. Therefore, the project is needed to replace the aging bridge.
The current design proposes to replace the bridge with a new, sturdier structure. The new bridge will feature sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both sides of the structure. The bridge would be replaced on a slight northern realignment to tie into existing sidewalk on the north side of Tuscaloosa Street and raised approximately two feet to accommodate additional width. The existing bridge will undergo demolition in order to make way for the new replacement structure. As such, off-site detours will be utilized during demolition and construction phases of the project. For vehicles traveling east on Tuscaloosa Street, the proposed detour will follow South Benbow Road to East Florida Street to Willow Road; westbound vehicles will reverse this route. The project is not anticipated to impact the nearby schools with the exception of the off-site detours.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
