U-5932: U.S. 17 at N.C. 211 Intersection to Interchange
U-5932: U.S. 17 at N.C. 211 Intersection to Interchange
The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing improvements to the U.S. 17 (Ocean Highway)/N.C. 211 (Southport Supply Road Southeast) intersection in Brunswick County. State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) Project No. U-5932 proposes to construct a grade-separated interchange at the existing at-grade intersection.
This project will be reprioritized for funding in the next State Transportation Improvement Program. A schedule for right of way, utilities and/or construction has not been finalized at this time. However, preliminary engineering activities (design, planning, studies) needed for project development are underway.
Study Area Map:
Purpose and Need:
The continued upgrade of U.S. 17 to freeway standards is a long-term goal of NCDOT, as U.S. 17 is a primary north-south travel corridor of the Coastal Plains region. Converting the U.S. 17/N.C. intersection to an interchange will contribute to the goal of upgrading this vital transportation corridor.
Project Overview
The proposed project would convert the existing U.S. 17 (Ocean Highway)/N.C. 211 (Southport Supply Road Southeast) at-grade intersection to a grade-separated interchange.

Project History
In June 2018, four concepts were shown to local officials and stakeholders. Following the close of the comment period, all input received was reviewed along with potential impacts and traffic operations. Based on this review, the project team revised the options displayed at the stakeholder meeting and developed the recommended alternative. The recommended alternative is a diamond interchange with the addition of a loop in quadrant A to carry traffic from northbound N.C. 211 to southbound U.S. 17. Both U.S. 17 and N.C. 211 are proposed to remain within the existing alignments.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
