Project Overview
The project proposes improvements to the interchange at New Stock Road and U.S. 23/29 (Future I-26) in Buncombe County. Improvements will include replacing the existing Future I-26 bridges over New Stock Road, reconstructing and realigning the interchange ramps, and widening Future I-26 to accommodate a future third lane in each direction.
Future I-26, New Stock Road, and Weaverville Road will remain open throughout construction. The current traffic management plan includes closures of one offramp at a time, during which time a detour would be utilized via Exit 23 south of the New Stock Road interchange.
The project will also replace the Aiken Road bridge over Future I-26. For construction of the Aiken Road bridge, a 3-mile off-site detour will be in place for approximately 18–24 months for Aiken Road traffic while the new bridge is built.
New Stock Road will be realigned to connect to Weaverville Road across from Leisure Mountain Road. Blueberry Hill Road will also be realigned to connect to Weaverville Road just north of its existing intersection. Pedestrian and bicycle improvements will include new sidewalks on both sides of New Stock Road and along the west side of Weaverville Road, as well as a shared-use path along the east side of Weaverville Road.
The project will include the following improvements:
- Replace the existing bridges on Future I-26 over New Stock Road
- Reconstruct and realign the interchange ramps
- Widen Future I-26 to accommodate a future third lane in each direction
- Replace the Aiken Road bridge over Future I-26; a 3-mile offsite detour will be used for Aiken Road traffic during construction of the new bridge
- Realign New Stock Road to connect with Weaverville Road across from Leisure Mountain Road
- Realign Blueberry Hill Road to tie into Weaverville Road just north of its existing intersection
- Construct 5-foot sidewalks along both sides of New Stock Road within project limits
- Construct a 5-foot sidewalk on the west side and a 10-foot shared-use path on the east side of Weaverville Road within the project limits
- New Aiken Road bridge will be wide enough for a future sidewalk on the north side of the bridge
The purpose of the project is to replace old bridges with new bridges that will meet current design standards and improve traffic flow in the vicinity of New Stock Road, Weaverville Road, and the Future I-26 interchange.
