Hunter Mill Paving and Restriping Program 2024

FCDOT is proposing the following changes within the Hunter Mill District as part of the 2024 Paving and Restriping Program:

  • Bike Lanes on Center Harbor Road between Wiehle Avenue and Reston Parkway
  • Crosswalk improvements at Center Harbor Road and Sundial Road

View the Center Harbor Road Parking Study referenced in Question 1.

To attend the meeting on April 9, please visit the 2024 Paving and Striping Program for login/dial-in information. If you would prefer to leave a recorded voice mail message rather than filling out the survey below, please call 703-890-5989; Project Code: 6078. Public comments are due April 23, 2024.

1. Center Harbor Road is planned to be repaved between Reston Parkway and Wiehle Avenue. To reduce speeding and make safety improvements for people who walk and ride bicycles, FCDOT proposes to add bike lanes and a new crosswalk to the street. FCDOT proposes to remove up to five right turn only lanes which will allow for more continuous, safe bicycle lanes and reduced crossing distance for people using crosswalks. These right turn only lanes do not meet VDOT's warrant. FCDOT also proposes to remove most street parking to add buffered bike lanes as our study found it was not well-used. In the two segments where street parking would remain, there would be regular bike lanes.

Please rank these options in order of preference.

2. To improve safety for people who walk and ride bicycles, FCDOT proposes removing five unmarked right turn lanes at Sundial Drive, Aldrin Elementary School's south entrance, N. Village Drive and Waterfront Drive. These right turn lanes are underused and do not meet VDOT's warrant requirement. Drivers would still be able to turn right from the travel lane. Removing them would allow the buffered bike lane to extend much further down Center Harbor Road and extend the buffer further down the street. Removing them would also reduce the crossing distance for people using crosswalks.
Do you support the removal of these five right turn only lanes?
