Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace the Bridge on Vandora Springs Road (S.R. 2713) over U.S. 70 in the Town of Garner.
The proposed project is needed to provide a safer, more durable structure that will enhance traffic flow and reliability of the transportation network. The project will also improve bicycle and pedestrian connectivity. The existing bridge was built in 1962.
The proposed new bridge will include:
- Four 12-foot travel lanes
- A 14-foot shared-use path on the west side
- A 5-foot-6-inch sidewalk on the east side
The proposed bridge will accommodate the future expansion of U.S. 70.
Vandora Springs Road will remain open during construction, using an on-site detour (temporary bridge to maintain traffic on Vandora Springs Road).
There will be temporary and permanent access changes to the Vandora Springs Road interchange with U.S. 70.
Temporary Access Change to the Interchange
During construction, which is expected to last 2 to 3 years:
- the on-ramps to U.S. 70 will be temporarily closed
- an on-site detour will be in use throughout the duration of construction, for maintenance of traffic across the bridge
- the U.S. 70 off-ramps to Vandora Springs Road will remain open
Permanent Access Change to the Interchange
The U.S. 70 eastbound off-ramp to Vandora Springs Road will be realigned to meet the U.S. 70 eastbound on-ramp from Vandora Springs Road. This will require closure of the 5th Avenue intersection with Vandora Springs Road.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
