CAV Questionnaire for Vulnerable Road Users
CAV Questionnaire for Vulnerable Road Users
About This Questionnaire
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is exploring how to prepare for and use Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) to better serve individuals who may face transportation challenges. By sharing your input, you will help guide decisions that improve safety, access, and opportunity for all Virginians. This is your chance to shape solutions that reflect real experiences and needs.
Who We Want to Hear From
We especially welcome input from Vulnerable Road Users, such as:
- People with mobility challenges
- Individuals who are blind or have low vision
- People who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Older adults
- Cyclists and pedestrians
What We’re Studying
We’d like to hear about your:
- Experiences with transportation
- Needs and challenges you face on the road
- Perspectives on the use of Connected and Automated Vehicles (passenger cars, shuttles, and related technologies)
Why This Matters
Your input ensures these new vehicles will work for everyone in Virginia from the very beginning.
- Companies like Waymo, May Mobility, and Tesla already run autonomous vehicle services in the U.S.
- Connected vehicle technology is expanding nationwide.
- By participating now, Virginians can help make sure these technologies improve safety, accessibility, and mobility for everyone in the Commonwealth.
What is a Connected and Automated Vehicle?
A Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) is a vehicle that can share and receive data from outside sources to assist driving tasks.
Potential benefits include:
- Lowering the number and severity of crashes
- Reducing traffic congestion
- Improving awareness of what’s happening on the roads
- Reducing reliance on traditional traffic tools (e.g., signals, signs) by enabling direct vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-road communication
As You Take This Questionnaire
Please imagine how these vehicles and technologies could fit into your daily life.
