Project Overview

Mesa Drive Safety Improvements
(Spicewood Springs Road to Far West Boulevard)

The City of Austin is seeking community input during the second phase of engagement for proposed safety and mobility improvements to Mesa Drive between Spicewood Springs Road and Far West Boulevard.

Routine pavement maintenance scheduled for summer 2026 provides an opportunity to implement cost-effective safety improvements as part of planned resurfacing work.

We invite you to review the proposed design and share your feedback through the survey below. Survey extended! The survey is open through June 28, 2026, and takes less than five minutes to complete.

◆ What We Heard in Phase One

More than 1,000 community members completed the first survey. Speeding was the top concern for nearly 40% of respondents.

Top requested improvements:

  • Safer intersections (33%)
  • Lower vehicle speeds (31%)
  • More pedestrian crossings (28%)
  • Protected bike lanes (28%)

About 20–25% of respondents said Mesa Drive does not need improvements. Review full survey results.

Proposed Improvements

Based on feedback from the first round of community engagement and technical analysis, the City is now seeking input on proposed improvements to Mesa Drive. These changes are intended to improve safety for people walking, biking, driving, and taking transit, while maintaining neighborhood access, emergency response, and overall traffic operations. They are also intended to help reduce speeding and better match how the street is used today and how community members would like to use it in the future.

Improve intersection safety at Far West Boulevard and Greystone Drive

  • Refresh unclear pavement markings and faded lane lines
  • Improve bike lane connections through intersections
  • Shorten crossing distances to improve visibility for people crossing on foot or by bike

Improve intersection safety at Spicewood Springs Road

  • Reorganize lanes at this high-crash intersection to create clearer and more predictable travel paths
  • Eliminate merging north and south of the intersection and improve bike lane continuity
  • Traffic modeling shows travel times would increase by about 2–5 seconds with vehicle queues still clearing within one light cycle
  • Analysis confirmed the changes would work with traffic operations near Anderson High School

Add pedestrian crossing islands

Install paint-and-post pedestrian crossing islands to make crossing the street easier and safer.

Improve bike facilities

  • Add a one-way buffered bike lane on each side of Mesa Drive
  • Add limited protective barriers at the start of each block, at pedestrian crossing islands, and around speed cushions to improve safety and help reduce speeding

Update street parking

  • Consolidate curbside parking on the east side of Mesa Drive
  • Create separate spaces for parking and bike lanes
  • Restrict parking near crossings and intersections to improve visibility and safety

Replace rubber speed cushions

Replace existing rubber speed cushions with asphalt speed cushions.
