How Planners Use PublicInput
Community engagement use cases to help state and local government planners shape the future of their communities using inclusive, responsive, and sustainable community engagement solutions.
INTRODUCTION
Planners work to create a more democratic, transparent and effective decision-making environment for the communities they serve. Placemakers by trade, planners are the driving force responsible for harnessing the collective intelligence of a community. As providers of inclusive, responsible, and sustainable solutions for the future, planners know that community engagement is more than a procedural step.
Whether it is addressing language barriers or closing gaps in participant representation, the consequence of an unsuccessful engagement effort could result in decisions that do not align with stakeholder needs or expectations i.e. unsustainable decision-making.
Planners are most effective when equipped with the right tools and resources for supporting the diverse needs of the community and planning initiatives. Faced with competing priorities, limited participation, resource constraints, and diverse community perspectives, GovTech solutions frequently play a crucial role in the success of any planning initiative.

PublicInput is a community engagement platform where planners can seamlessly centralize multiple initiatives using solutions and features designed to increase reach, engagement, and secure input data for reporting and analysis.
Designed to remove barriers to participation, the PublicInput platform helps planners communicate with those most impacted by planning projects. Featuring technology that automatically records and stores all valuable data in one convenient location, our platform helps mitigate the common challenges faced by planners.
Let’s take a deeper dive into how PublicInput helps planners strike a balance in the planning process.
How Planners Use PublicInput

Get the Word Out to Those Most Impacted by Planning Projects
The PublicInput Comprehensive Planning Project Template helps planners establish a holistic citizen engagement framework for comprehensive master planning. Urban, state, and local government planners looking to grow and develop their community can offer residents a central location to access information and engage in the planning process. PublicInput’s platform offers a variety of tools to empower planners by expanding their reach and making two-way communication easier; these tools also empower your community to access information and engage in the decision-making process.

Remove Barriers to Public Participation
Long-term transportation plans require a lot of time and energy from transportation planners. PublicInput is uniquely suited to support transportation planning with a built-in, comprehensive public engagement framework. Check out our prebuilt, customizable Bus Rapid Transit Study Template. Features include interactive mapping questions with custom pings, language translation, text messaging, and public meeting access with automated transcripts and recordings– all designed to help transportation planners remove barriers to participation.

Make Data Secure and Accessible
PublicInput supports planners in enhancing public safety by offering a platform to understand the factors that contribute to the potential risks and hazards in the community. Planners use our Strategic Safety Plan Template to increase accessibility and to collect and securely store input for their community. The safety plan template supports geolocation for representative sampling, interactive map-based questions, and prioritization exercises all stored in a centralized location. Additionally, PublicInput’s data system is SOC2 Type 2 Certified, per the AICPA, and our cloud-based hosting platform is managed within Microsoft Azure under top-notch data security.

Improve Efficiencies and Close the Feedback Loop
Planners often face limitations in their community engagement work. Time, budget, and staff resources can constrain the ability to conduct extensive, meaningful community engagement. These challenges can result in superficial or rushed engagement efforts, in turn reducing the effectiveness of the planning process. PublicInput supports planners by mitigating resource constraints in a variety of ways– from streamlining workflows and data analysis to templates.
HOW BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NC USES PUBLICINPUT TO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
The Buncombe County Planning Department sought to co-design a brighter future for its residents using engagement to establish their vision for the 2043 Comprehensive Plan.

The Buncombe County 2043 Comprehensive Plan received over 10,000 comments from community members.

Over 700 attendees participated in over 30 child and family-friendly meetings to gather input on the 2043 Comprehensive Plan. A virtual version also gathered an additional 1,000+ views.

“One goal for this project was to reach as many Buncombe County residents as possible in order to create a comprehensive plan that was truly representative of our community. That included reaching youth, households in rural communities, individuals with disabilities, non-English speakers, and historically disadvantaged populations… we thought outside of the box in designing our engagement activities, and we checked our data routinely throughout the process to see who we were missing to put additional efforts into reaching those people.”
