Sheffield Park is an 8+ acre local park at 1331 Tarrington Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205 in East Charlotte. The park offers paved and unpaved walking trails, a playground, picnic shelters, basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts. The park also offers connections to Evergreen Nature Preserve (a 77-acre urban nature preserve), the Winterfield Park Community Garden, and Winterfield Elementary School.  The original park design was inspired by the shape of a beetle. Following a request to explore options to add pickleball to Sheffield Park, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation converted the existing full-court basketball court into three pickleball courts in an effort to maximize the amenities available to residents at Sheffield Park. However, this decision was made before directly engaging with County residents. In response, Meckleburg County staff created this online website and survey, as well as hosted a community meeting to explore additional improvements for Sheffield Park. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback throughout the engagement process. October 18, 2023 Update: Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation closed the online survey below for potential improvements to Sheffield Park on October 13, 2023, which had been available since September 8, 2023. Based on feedback received online and at the public meeting hosted on October 4, 2023, there is support to reestablish a full-court basketball court within the park while retaining the pickleball courts. Additionally, staff received multiple requests for additional seating, shade, and path improvements within the park. Below you will find a summary of the online survey.  Within the coming months, Park and Recreation proposes to convert one of the existing half-court basketball courts to a full-court basketball court and resurface the other half-court basketball court. New seating will be provided throughout the park, focusing on new benches under the existing shade trees at the playground and around the courts. If the project budget allows, a shade structure will be added near the updated basketball courts. The Department is also working with TreesCharlotte to plant additional shade trees throughout the park to establish a more substantial tree canopy. Though staff received additional requests for other new amenities such as splash pads, lighting, and restrooms, those elements are not typically found in local/neighborhood parks and are more often added to regional parks with the appropriate support infrastructure. See plan below for proposed park improvements.    Throughout the engagement process for Sheffield Park, staff also received feedback that will help to improve future engagement efforts. Prior to future changes within existing parks, staff will work to engage nearby residents to inform and solicit feedback regarding proposed changes to park amenities. Residents indicated a preference for a mix of in-person and online engagement opportunities that include: online surveys/websites, in person meetings, and attendance at neighborhood organization meetings.    March 19, 2024 Update: Initial improvements within Sheffield Park are complete, which include a new full size basketball court, resurfaced half court basketball court, and tree planting. Jones, Sr. Golf Course public input webpage, formally the Renaissance Park Golf Course.  The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners approved a request to rename this course for the former County Manager on June 6, 2017. The 18-hole course was designed by Michael Hurdzan and opened in 1987 as a reclamation project on the former York Road Landfill.  Having been constructed on a landfill, the course has seen some maintenance challenges throughout the years. The County recognized the deteriorating state of the facility and began execution of a potential Five Phase Plan.  Phase 1: Preliminary Evaluation and Engineering Assessment – 100% Complete - August 2017 Phase 2: Evaluation and Engineering Assessment and Golf Course Renovation – 100% Complete - October 2018 Phase 3: Engineering and Detailed Golf Course Redesign – 25% Complete - Estimated completion October 2022 Phase 4: Bid and Construct Golf Course Redesign – Not currently funded Phase 5: Monitoring of Golf Course Phase 1 was executed in 2017, when SCS Engineers were contracted to complete a ‘Preliminary Evaluation and Engineering Assessment’ of the facility.  The objective of Phase 1 was to develop an overall Existing Conditions Site Plan that is reflective of the current site conditions, overlaid on key golf course features.  The findings of this report led the County to move on to Phase 2, an ‘Evaluation and Engineering Assessment and Golf Course Renovation’.  Phase 2 consisted of subsurface investigation of the property to gain a better grasp of the landfill impact. You can download the Phase 1 and 2 reports below.  The County is currently in Phase 3 of this process, which is the complete redesign of the golf course, factoring in the information from Phase 1 and 2.  In this process a golf course design company, Ronald M. Garl Golf Course Design, Inc., will work closely with SCS Engineers to design a course that will utilize the strengths of the property while minimize any weaknesses.  Below you will find project updates and timelines, meeting dates, key contact information, and other important information about the Harry L. Construction is complete on the last link of Little Sugar Creek Greenway heading south in Mecklenburg County. The greenway trail starts at the James K. Polk Historic Site and continues to the South Carolina state line.  The trail is 12 feet wide, approximately 3 miles in length and will offer trail users the experience of traversing through steep woodlands. An elevated boardwalk and monument at the state line will also be highlights of the project. Pedestrian access points are available at the President James K Polk Historic Site (public parking also available), Stockdale Court, Lake Drive at Pineville Lake Park/Belle Johnston Center (public parking also available), Overlook Ridge Street, and Gilroy Drive (In Lancaster County, SC).  The trail connects with the newly constructed sections of Little Sugar Creek Greenway (Tyvola Rd.  to the James K. Polk Historic Site), which are part of the Carolina Thread Trail and also the Cross Charlotte Trail (north of I-485). A contiguous trail exists from the South Carolina State Line north to Cordelia Park. Future plans for the Cross Charlotte Trail include extending the trail to Cabarrus County. A steam enhancement project has been completed along with the greenway construction. This section of the creek has not been dredged and straightened like the other sections of Little Sugar Creek, and like the majority of large streams and creeks throughout the County and the country. Due to an increase in the velocity of flow during rain events due to increased stormwater runoff, the banks of the stream have suffered severe erosion, and the stream was incised (meaning the stream bottom has lowered and is no longer connected to the floodplain). The stream empties into Sugar Creek in South Carolina, and eventually, into the Catawba River. Heavy storms transport hundreds of tons of sediment yearly, which impairs our drinking water source. The improvements that will be made to the stream include stabilization of the banks by reshaping the stream channel from a rectangular cross section into a more natural, and hydraulically effective trapezoidal shape which will reduce sedimentation downstream.

Greenway Trail is currently being developed along Long Creek in three funded phases. The first ~1.5 mile phase of Long Creek Greenway is complete from I-77 to Treyburn Drive, which includes a connection along Dixon Branch Greenway under W.T. Harris Blvd to connect to Northlake Center Parkway. Phase 2 construction began in Summer 2022 and is nearly complete. Phase 3 began construction in November 2023 and will extend the greenway trail south to Oakdale Road. Long Creek Greenway is being designed and constructed in collaboration with a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services Stream Improvement Project: https://charlottenc.gov/StormWater/Projects/Pages/StreamWetlandRestoration.aspx See phasing exhibit below:  Phase 1 (I-77 to Treyburn) was completed in Summer 2023. The greenway trail provides pedestrian connections to Long Creek Club Drive, Reames Road, Secretariat Drive, Northlake Center Parkway, Bayview Parkway, and Treyburn Drive. Phase 2 (Treyburn to I-485) was completed in March 2024. The project includes +/- 2.5 miles of new greenway trail (asphalt, concrete, and boardwalk) with public access connections, roadway underpasses, swale bridges, modular block retaining wall, and four (4) pre-fabricated bridges of varying spans, and water quality pond. The greenway trail will provide pedestrian connections to Treyburn Drive, Ambleside Drive, Belstead Brook Court, Beatties Ford Road and Trotter Road. The Stream Enhancement portion of the project includes +/- 2.5 miles of stream improvements including realignment of existing centerline, installation of in-stream structures, revegetation of restoration areas, and +/- 14-acres of wetland restoration and enhancement. Phase 3 (I-485 to Oakdale) is currently under construction. This project includes +/- 1.5 miles of new greenway trail as well as improvements to existing paths in Oak Hills Park. The greenway trail will provide pedestrian connections to Primm Road and Oakdale Road. The Stream Enhancement portion of the project includes 2+ miles of stream improvements. November 17, 2023 Update: Mecklenburg County is beginning construction on the 1.1 mile McAlpine Creek Greenway Trail segment between the existing trail and parking lot at Johnston Road and Pineville-Matthews Road (NC-51).  This project includes a new parking lot at Pineville-Matthews Road and connections to Ryder Ave, Pineville-Matthews Road/NC-51, and Johnston Road. The contractor will be Eaglewood, Inc. and project is anticipated to be complete in Mid-2025. We look forward to seeing you on the trail in 2025.   August 10, 2021 Update: Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is providing an update on the McAlpine Creek Greenway project (Johnston Road to Green Rea Road). Due to difficulty acquiring the necessary real estate to make a greenway trail connection to Green Rea Road at this time, the Department is exploring a new trail alignment that terminates the greenway north of Highway 51/Pineville-Matthews Road (at the proposed trailhead parking lot). This alignment will include an access to Ryder Avenue, consistent with one of the options shared at the December 2020 virtual community engagement meeting (see map below). We will use any remaining project funding that would have paid for the connection to Green Rea Road to improve access to the greenway trail.   This greenway trail project is intended to expand the existing 6.5 mile McAlpine/McMullen/Four Mile system and end north of Pineville-Matthews Road.  The trail will provide a large number of residential areas to the north of Hwy 51 direct access to the greenway trail that links directly to office, hotel, and retail shopping areas.  Several multi-family and single family developments are among those that will be linked to the greenway system which will total 7.5+ miles when this greenway section is constructed.  The project also includes a new parking lot at Highway 51/Pineville-Matthews Road.
