Winter Shutdown

All crews and construction equipment have been moved out of the area. Construction will resume in Spring 2026. Crews expect to begin work on the south end of US-191 near Emma Park Road and move north as the weather improves.

U.S. Route 191 Indian Canyon Corridor

Construction throughout the U.S. 191 Indian Canyon Corridor began in April 2025 and will likely extend through the end of 2026. Stakeholder and community input guided the planned improvements for the area, which include:

  •

  • North of Summit

  • Approximately one mile of chain-up area widening

  • An additional southbound passing lane between mileposts 273 and 275

  • Intersection improvements at four locations: Right Fork Canyon, Skitzy Canyon, Sowers Canyon, and the US-191 and US-40 intersection in Duchesne

  •

  • South of Summit

  • Approximately nine miles of roadway and shoulder widening, including chain-up area widening and new pavement

  •

  • Corridor wide

  • Installing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) conduit, fiber optic backbone, and ITS equipment at multiple locations

  • Miscellaneous drainage and guardrail improvements

Additionally, a new traffic signal at the intersection of US-40 (Main Street) and US-191 (100 West) in Duchesne will be installed in summer 2025.

History

Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) completed multiple projects on the U.S. Route 191 Indian Canyon Corridor between US-40 and US-6 during 2023 and 2024. Improvements to the corridor will continue during 2025 and 2026 to ensure the road withstands the projected additional heavy vehicle traffic and to improve safety for all travelers on the route. The 45-mile corridor runs from Duchesne to Helper.

Nearly $104 million has been allocated for improvements to the corridor. The Utah Legislature appropriated $88.5 million in their 2023 session, and UDOT has provided just over $15.49 million in additional state and federal funding for improvements to the US-191 Indian Canyon corridor.

During the 2024 construction season, three projects were completed:

  • A new southbound passing lane on US-191 between mileposts 280 to 282

  • A pavement preservation project that placed fresh pavement, updated existing guardrails, and installed four cattleguards at multiple locations on US-191 from US-6 to US-40

  • Improvements to the intersection of US-191 and US-6
